It's Apple Season!

My weekend was pretty eventful! I was busy on Saturday, starting at 8am by going to Rice's Flea Market in New Hope, PA. It was a perfect sunny day and I love browsing through all the rows of goodies. The only things I bought were food items, go figure! On the way in, a produce stand was selling berries for $1 per package, so I got 1 pack of blueberries and 2 each of blackberries and raspberries. I also bought a loaf of strawberry bread. It was $5.50, which is expensive, but I had a slice for breakfast the next day and it was very tasty!

After the flea market, my friend and I went to breakfast, then to Solebury Orchards, also in New Hope. They had many fruits to pick, but we decided on apples. They have many varieties, but being early in the apple season, only the Gala apples were ripe. It was fun climbing the ladders to get to the top of the trees, where the branched were filled with apples! We picked about 10 pounds of apples.

We immediately decided the best thing to do with all these apples was to bake pies! We bought pie crust from the store, because I didn't really feel like making it from scratch. We made 2 different pies. The first was a regular apple pie, with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. The second pie I added a package of raspberries to the top, and only added some ginger to spice the apples. Each pie got only 1/2 cup of sugar, because the apples were pretty sweet to begin with. The pies turned out great! We ate them at our family barbecues.

And the pies wouldn't have been so easy to make without the use of an apple corer/peeler/slicer. It makes quick work of making the apples ready!

Back to school tomorrow! I'm a substitute teacher, so having a job the second day of school is pretty nice. Have a nice rest of the week!
